The Great Himalaya Trail is a network of existing trails. There are two main routes and many alternative connecting trails allowing you to be flexible with distance, according to the weather and where you want visit. The upper GHT route passes through many established trekking areas, and some of its sections take in passes over 5000m. The three passes between Everest and Makalu Barun cross 6000m requiring some mountaineering experience. Maps of Nepal is a compact 4m square office on the busy and dusty New Baneshwor road sandwiched (at the time of writing) between two shops selling bright-coloured, fibreglass bathroom products. It is the place to find all (most) of the 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 sheet maps of Nepal and all kinds of government surveys, statistics, geological reports etc. It is not always fully stocked but worth going to try your luck.
