trashi labsta rolwaling

Trashi Labsta (5,760m), (or Tashi Labsta) Rolwaling, Nepal

It has a reputation as one of the trickiest trekking passes in Nepal, but offers a great alternative, or addition, to trekking in the Everest Region. Also take a look at these excellent and unusual pictures from the Rolwaling trek: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29123216@N05/4019917185/in/faves-the_great_himalaya_trail/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/29123216@N05/4065658192/in/set-72157622439517359/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/29123216@N05/4002597484/in/set-72157622439517359/

Mount Saipal (7,031m)

Don’t have much information about Saipal other than it is big and remote. I’ll try and look into the Himalayan Database and see who has tried to climb it and when. A cursory Google search finds the last expedition to be a British one lead by Chuck Evans way back in April 1992 – Jul 1992. UPDATE: this just seen on Nepalnews.com – actually it is Paulo Grobel, the French alpiniste and explorer and not Gabriel as quoted. Mount Saipal, a 6,925 m high beautiful summit in far-western Nepal, has been scaled for the first time. An expedition team of [...]

Short walks and activities in Limi Valley, Humla

Walking / trekking trips In order fully appreciate the outstanding beauty of Limi and encourage visitors to stay longer, exploration to higher altitudes and places of interest provides an unforgettable perspective of the area. From Til a day trip up towards the glaciers of the Nala Kanka Himal range brings you beneath the towering south face of Pemba. To the west Mount Memonazum or to the east Mount Karkzang could present the serious climber with an exciting challenge. Note however that this mountain range, particularly Mount Pemba is regarded as sacred and so permission would need to be agreed with [...]

Gompas and festivals in Limi Valley, Humla, West Nepal

Rinchenling Gompa in Halji and its festivals Rinchenling Gompa in Halji was founded in the 11th century and is the most important Gompa in Limi. The monastery originally belonged to the Sakyapa sect and later to the Dri-gung Ka-gyu-pa sect. For centuries, it has been the cultural and religious centre of not only the three villages in the Limi valley but also for all the Bhotia community of upper Humla and western Tibet. Local people accept that the Gompa is a protector of the three villages in the valley and believe that they couldn’t have been there without the monastery. [...]

Facinating photographs from Humla, Dolpa and Mustang from 1970s

Here are some facinating picures archived by digital SOAS. It is getting rarer these days to see black and white photography and, even when you do, black and white photography looks modern. These pictures are scanned from film and reach back as far as 1956. The first question that springs to mind is: has anything changed? Of course the answer is yes: in many places numerable things have changed – this list includes solar lighting, health posts, suspension bridges, education and skills training, telecommunications and even roads creeping steadily northwards. However, visit Humla, Dolpa or Mustang and you’ll see that [...]

Accommodation and restaurants in Dolpa

Most people who come to Dolpa come in tenting groups. However, staying in hotels is a nice way to get into touch with the local population. The hotels in Dolpa are simple guesthouses and homestays. They generally have 2 to 4 rooms for guests and charge between 200-300 NPR a room. You have to bring your own sleeping bag. In Dolpa it is common to have a big kitchen, while it is at the same time the living area, as this is the only warm place in the house. Tourists who stay in the guesthouse, can often stay in the [...]
