The Great Himalaya Trail is a network of existing trails. There are two main routes and many alternative connecting trails allowing you to be flexible with distance, according to the weather and where you want visit. The upper GHT route passes through many established trekking areas, and some of its sections take in passes over 5000m. The three passes between Everest and Makalu Barun cross 6000m requiring some mountaineering experience.

The lower route, or the ‘Green Route’ is so-called because of the green line on the as yet unpublished GHT map. And of course, as a lower route, the surroundings are generally a good deal greener that the alpine scenery of the upper route. Dawa Steven and Api Sherpa are planning to walk this route beginning in January 2011.

Himalaya Map House & Robin Boustead along with TAAN and NTB have produced a great overview map of the upper and lower routes of the GHT. It makes a great wall poster. Should you wish to purchase this poster of this for your wall, please get in touch via the contact page. It is also available as a free jpeg download here.
